Chapter 3: Lord, Liar, or Lunatic?

If I have ever had your kids or grandkids in school, you can be sure they had The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe read aloud to them. At the end of each reading I made a point to help them draw the conclusion that C. S. Lewis mirrored the Easter Story in this work of fiction, and let them know that all of the books in The Chronicles of Narnia are in fact, mirroring a bible story. It wasn't until a few years ago however, that I discovered that not only was C. S. Lewis a talented writer of children's fiction, but he was also one of the leading apologists of the twentieth century. His assertion that Jesus was either Lord, a liar, or a lunatic is a very compelling argument to those who would say that He is not our Lord and Savior.

1 Peter 3:15-16 “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.”

"This is every apologists’ “go-to” verse when defending the purpose of apologetics, and for a good reason. While not everyone is called to be a full-time minister, (Ephesians 4:11), Peter says that every Christian is called to give a reason for their hope in Christ., Don’t leave out the “gentleness and respect” part!" (Manning 2019)

In this post we will discuss Chapter 3: Lord, Liar, or Lunatic? In your comments please share any insights you may have had or connections you my have made while reading this chapter. Feel free to consider the following questions as well as the "What do you think?" questions within the chapter in shaping your response. Keep in mind, however, we are not looking for a list of answers to the questions.

Manning, Erik (2019, May 5) 19 Essential Bible Verses and Passages on Apologetics, cross-examined.org Retrieved from https://crossexamined.org/19-essential-bible-verses-and-passages-on-apologetics/

1) C.S. Lewis comments, “...A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is , the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse.”
What would you say to a statement that says Jesus Christ was a great moral teacher and certainly a great leader, but nothing more (John 10:30-33)?

2) What other alternatives do we have to Jesus being either a liar, a lunatic or Lord?

3) Does it make any sense for Jesus to have been a liar or just someone who was sincerely
wrong about who he was? Why or why not?

4) Why would someone not be able to accept Jesus as Lord if they clearly believe He was
neither a liar or lunatic?
