Chapter 10: Can You Keep A Good Man Down?

1 Corinthians 15:3-8 “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last, of all, he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.”

The central claim of the gospel is Christ has been raised. If Christ isn’t raised, Paul says the whole Christian faith is a bad joke and a waste of time. (1 Corinthians 15:14, 1 Corinthians 15:17) Here Paul passes on a creed he was given by other believers before him that list off a host of resurrection appearances to individuals and groups. This creed has become the linchpin for most arguments for the historicity of the resurrection." (Manning 2019)

2) Describe the beating and death of Christ?

3) Of the alternative theories listed in opposition to the resurrection of Christ, are any them reasonable?

4) As you consider the objective evidence for the resurrection and the alternative theories presented, what takes more faith--“Christ rose from the dead,” “someone stole the body,” etc.?

5) Because of what Christ has accomplished through the resurrection, what ways can it bring about change in your life?
